Il Gatto e La Volpe

Il Gatto e La Vole - di Edoardo Bennato

Another great song! A bit old but certainly catchy and with great potential for Italian language activities in the classroom. read on!

The Lyrics

se no poi te ne pentirai
non capita tutti i giorni
di avere due consulenti
due impresari, che si fanno
in quattro per te!...

Avanti, non perder tempo, firma qua
è un normale contratto è una formalita'
tu ci cedi tutti i diritti

Activity Ideas
Ok. This song by default should be played and used for anything having to do with Pinocchio. The story by Carlo Collodi and the two characters, the Cat and the Fox, are simply legendary. I would definitely consider using the song for a background soundtrack, to play as a funny support and even to dramatize a particular section of the story from the great author.

Sure, the story of Pinocchio may sound more suitable to younger children than an older audience but I can ensure you that the original story has plenty of topics and scenes to work around deeper and more complex structures of the language and themes for discussion. I wrote a couple of additional resources about the story of Pinocchio you may want to check out as well:
The Worlde
I love making these wordles, they truly take one minute and can offer so much to the eye, with words that are structured as images.

Wordle: Il gatto e la volpe

In this wordle you will notice the most used word is PUOI - you Can. I think the song leads itself to a whole bunch of structures that the students can create saying what one can do:

puoi cantare
puoi giocare
puoi ascoltare la radio, ....

Think up of scenarios or scene and ask students to come up with things one can do in that scenario.

Then, ask students to find in the wordle as many words as they can that relate to show business (what the song is really about)

  • students make lists of words and get ready to explain why they think the words relate to business - ask them to make sentences with the words
  • students find the words that rhyme in the song and try to mix and match them - change one word that still matches or change the meaning of the sentence with matching endings (pentirai - guai - ti pentirai di essere nei guai)
  • invite students to take on one verse of the song and use images to support the story it tells (the first verse could use images of someone rushing somewhere and two people in rugs asking for a moment of their time...)
Taking it Further
The song is about ways to convince someone to get into business with you. So the song can become the source of a nice conversation of different ways in which businesses, small and big, invite us to buy their products.

Ask students to research one business they know and find ways that are described in the song, in literal or in figurative speech, that relate to that busness. Ask students to find a picture or a commercial they would use the song as background music for. You can even ask students to make a movie montage where the song is the message and the ad or photo montage are the visual clues. I think this would make for a really great follow up idea. Hope you have fun with the song.
