This song is one of the most representative ones about the duality of the Italian people based on the geography of the country. Italy being a country surrounded by sea on three sides, and relatively narrow for a great part of its territory, with two great islands as important provinces, it is truly a country of sea people and country people. This song celebrates the sea side of things, but also the love for stability and city-like life styles, and how these realities collide, meet and then separate on a cyclical basis. The lyrics of the song are quite simple and the tune easy to follow. I would suggest complete some of the activities for this song at al early level of Italian language courses.

Activity Ideas

1. It is worth considering all the verbs in the song - which appear in third person singular or in first plural - do a quick review of their meaning and ask students to complete each verb in both forms using a T-Chart (i.e. Va - Andiamo; Fermiamo - ferma, ...)
2. Invite students to use the words of the song (from the worlde direct if that is easier, and make up as many sentences as possible using as many words as possible. Make it a short game.
3. Ask students to quickly list the provinces of Italy that are touched by the sea and those that aren't. Then make it harder: consider the provinces with the most territory by the sea and those with the least. Invite students to research the industries that are most active in those provinces, and relate that information to the idea of living by the sea. Do all provinces (regions by the sea) necessarily have the most people employed in sea-related work? Why? Why not? Engage students in a nice conversation.
4. Invite students to review a few key points of the importance of the Italian Navy for the country. La Marina Italiana is a very important part of the country's identity. Can students tell you why in their own words?
5. Use the song theme to reverse the roles. How would the people of the land be seen and relate to the people of the sea? Invite students to create lyrics for the reverse ideas.
